Turku (Åbo in Swedish) is a city in Finland and the center of the province of Southwest Finland at the mouth of the River Aura on the coast of the Archipelago Sea. The city had a population of 194,244 on 31 March 2021 and the Turku region 330,482 in November 2018.

Thus, Turku is by population the sixth largest of the municipalities in Finland and third largest of the neighbouring areas.

Turku was born at the mouth of the River Aura even before the 13th century, which is the oldest city in Finland. The year the city was founded is said to be in 1229. That is when the Pope Gregory IX mentions in his bull for the first time a city called Aboa (the Latin name for Turku). Even earlier, the Arab geographer Al Idrisi refers to a city of Abua in the far north. Turku used to be Finland’s most important population center, the country’s unofficial capital in 1809–1812 and until the 1840s the largest city in Finland. Turku is still the center of local administration, economy and culture for its area. The city is the headquarters of the Regional State Administrative Agency of the Southwest Finland and the regional center of the Southwest Finland.
